Module 4 Lesson 4

Composting

Let’s talk about composting. You’ve probably heard of it—or maybe even tried it. If so, awesome. If not, no worries. We’re not diving deep here, but it’s worth a quick chat. Up to this point, we’ve focused on reducing food waste in your kitchen. But really, it’s about preventing waste. Still, even the most mindful foodie ends up with scraps that can’t be eaten—like moldy lemons or avocado pits. That’s where composting comes in.

Think of it as your Plan B for food waste. Instead of tossing scraps into the trash where they’ll sit in a landfill, composting turns them into nutrient-rich dirt that helps plants grow. How cool is that? Now, if you Google “composting,” you might feel overwhelmed—hot composting, cold composting, worm bins, bokashi bins. My daughter loves geeking out over it all. But here’s the thing: you don’t need to be an expert to get started.

And if composting outside isn’t an option—maybe you live in an apartment or don’t have the space—there are electric composters for indoor use. They’re compact, easy to use, and get the job done. They can be a bit pricey, but if you’re serious about reducing waste, they’re worth considering.

To make it even easier, we’ve got a special guest, my daughter Izzy, who in the bonus video is going to  break it down to the basics—no fluff, just what you need to know to get started. Plus, we’ve attached a PDF with simple composting tips to help you take the first step without overthinking it.
